This is taken from the book, "Za Za's Baby Brother" by Lucy Cousins.
Stressed to the max from a sleep deprived shopping trip with a screaming baby demanding a feed, poor Mrs Zebra just can't keep a happy face. Not even for the children's story book. Classic.
Even Mr Zebra is over it. At least Za Za is still smiling, well almost. Now the giraffe, well he IS smiling and having quite the time watching the drama unfold it seems.
Mrs Zebra really needs to get some pants.
Have you found any funny illustrations in a Children's book?

Hehehe very funny x
ReplyDeleteI couldn't help but share as soon as I noticed it.
DeleteI got this book when pregnant with number 2. I found it totally depressing but No 1 seemed to take it in his stride, and it is accurate, so I've since given it to a number of 'big brothers' and 'big sisters' when dropping off the baby pressie.
ReplyDeleteThey should show Mrs Zebra when she has a pre teen and numerous other kids to deal with...new born was a breeze!
Yes, I had through about that, throw in a couple of extra kids and a surly teenager for good measure.
DeleteI love it! Sometimes I think these story books are aimed at us parents just to help us realise that it's all normal! Poor Mrs Zebra indeed!
ReplyDeleteSophie xo
I agree, my boys never noticed her expression.
Deletewhat a great little book!
ReplyDeletewish i had this when i was pregnant with PJ :)
might keep it on "the list" for any future presents i may need
thanks for sharing
xx
It is a fun little book. Poor Za Za, he eventually get's his cuddles and story.
DeleteHaha that's cute! I love the children's books when they "keep it real" :p
ReplyDeleteAi @ Sakura Haruka
Exactly! It's refreshing.
Deleteha ha ha. I love children's books, they could keep me entertained for a good while.
ReplyDeleteI am going to keep my eye out for these types of things from now.
Deletehehe I love it!!! what a great book for a lil one about to have a brother/sister!
ReplyDeleteWe had about 5 books about impending arrivals, but they loved this one the most.
DeleteI love Lucy Cousins books - they are some of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteShe did a great job, with the illustrations aswell!
Deleteoh this is gold - i think i need to investigate childrens books a little bit ha ha xx
ReplyDeleteYep yep! I know!
DeleteI think Lucy Cousins should have included a "All characters appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental" caveat.
ReplyDeleteMrs Zebra and I have a lot in common most days! x
I think it's such a subtle change but really impacting for parents.
DeleteI haven't heard of this book but the characters look like they would be fun to read about !
ReplyDeleteHave the best day !
Me
It's a great little book!
DeleteHaha! Sophie your post made me laugh!
ReplyDeleteYay! Mission accomplished.
DeleteLove it! We read a story last week about a very cranky cat. Bailey called him the scary cat.
ReplyDeleteFunny thing was, the cover labelled it as 'a love story'
A very cranky scary love story, sounds about right!
DeleteThat's hilarious! There's a serious shortage of pants in Zebra-town!
ReplyDeleteI thought that was weird, I mean, they put tops on them, why not pants!
DeleteI haven't read this book but I have identified with or got a chuckle out of so many others. Olivia books are popular in this house and I enjoy the parental level of these as well as the children's story.
ReplyDeleteI love the wit of the authors to include something extra for parents.
Delete:) I love Where is the Green Sheep for the Near Sheep alone
ReplyDeleteI bet it's been read hundreds of times!!
DeleteWhat a brilliantly accurate expression! I can't think of any specific illustrations I've chuckled at. But like movies, I love a book that is written for the parent to enjoy too.
ReplyDeleteThat's right, I love the kids movies that subtly cater for parents too.
DeleteHaha I had never thought of it like that. Thanks for the laugh!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!
DeleteLove it! We were given that book after #2 was born, so true!
ReplyDeleteIt keeps it real, I love that.
DeleteHahaha thats a crack up! Ive read a few kids books that just cracked me up.. either through their illustrations or the ridiculously serious writing :)
ReplyDeleteThere must be so many out there. I am definitely going to be paying more attention now.
DeleteMy oldest son loved this story. We got the book when his little brother was born. I never noticed Mrs Zebra didn't have any pants. Very funny!
ReplyDeleteI was once reading a Richard Scarry book we borrowed from the library. In it was an illustration of a poodle smoking a cigarette using one of those cigarette holders. Then I'm sure I saw a cigarette butt in the sand at one of his beach scenes. You'd never see that in a children's book today!
That's crazy hey!! It would never get past the editor let along the publisher these days!
DeleteThis looks like a great book - perfect for our impending arrival. The winning book here is still Pants - it seems to appeal to both of our senses of humour
ReplyDeleteWe ended up with about 5 books referring to impending brother/sister arrivals, this one had to be the funniest though.
DeleteVery cute book, haven't come across this one before. Know that look!
ReplyDeleteI know, poor Mrs Zebra just needed a good sleep in and a cocktail I think!
DeleteThe books are definitely aimed at the parents reading. They've gotta be. Too funny.
ReplyDeleteLeanne @ Deep Fried Fruit
Helps us get more involved in the story when they keep it real like that.
DeleteLol I know how that zebra feels.
ReplyDeleteI think Mrs Zebra should have her own series.
DeleteThat's classic! I dont think I would have even noticed the facial expressions because of my sleep deprivation at the moment!
ReplyDeleteI know! Poor thing, :(
DeleteI think you have inspired me to find some funny illustrations too. The weirdest one I have found so far is a nursery rhyme book where some of the characters actually look like my eldest 2 kids and the mum in the story looks like me - creepy...
ReplyDeleteWow, that would have serious creep factor! Does the author live down the street from you? heheh
DeleteHahaha, I always think these things when I am reading kids books. And I always make up alternate storylines and imagine that perfectly innocent words and stories are actually euphemisms for other less savoury things!
ReplyDeleteWe change words of some things, like Nappy instead of diaper, or if they use 'stupid' we change that too.
